Service Information etc.

preface : Long Stratton's BikeActive Taxi service, incorporating our chat rickshaw, came into being in memory of the BikeActive Norfolk chairman's late mother, Mrs Mary Briggs. Some will know that Mary lived in Porter Rd, Long Stratton. Because she had lost a lung to tuberculosis, nursing a patient, while in her twenties, there were occasions when she would struggle to walk into the town despite it only being a few hundred metres away. The cost of a taxi to and from the town was prohibitive and so without a lift being available, she would have to stay home...

Daisy...

...our lovely side-by-side tandem trike is our most popular piece of equipment. With its sociable seating arrangement, you will sit next to one of our service volunteers who will steer and pedal you to your destination.

For those wishing to get exercise you can pedal too but if you want to take a more laid-back approach, you can rest your feet on the pedals and allow our volunteer and the electric-assist motor to take the strain.

The passenger position is fully adjustable to accommodate most, the seat swivels to allow ease of access, arm rests allow you to get comfortable and a seatbelt gives you a secure mount.

Daisy has a basket for transporting goods if you go shopping during your journey.

If you want to get around Long Stratton, though struggle to make the journey walking but would still like to do a modicum of exercise, then book DAISY to get you out and about in the fresh air.

Hazel...

...our trusty wheelchair transporter with electric-assist, assured & secure points of contact and reassuring seat belt. If you are a wheelchair user, who wants to get out around Long Stratton and its environs, then Hazel is for you.

Easy loading is ensured with the tilting platform, which is then firmly secured in place with a lock pin. Suspension ensures a smooth ride as we cruise around the town. The seat belt supplies that extra sense of security and precludes the need for a cycle helmet.

We can take you to and from a venue, e.g. The Co-op, the Library or St. Mary's church. Our expectation is that you could manage yourself during your visit. We will be responsible for taking and collecting you.

If you are a wheelchair user and would like to travel in and around the town but can't manage the distances easily, then booking HAZEL may be the way forward, helping you to stay independent, while enjoying the fresh air and sociability of cycling transport.

So if you have a friend or carer you want or need to accompany you on your visit into town, then Ricky fits the bill.

With its no step access to the seat, its seat belts for two people... negating the need for a cycle helmet and unrestricted views of the way ahead, it is a lovely way to travel. The self-levelling suspension ensures a smooth and comfortable ride for everyone. The hood offers protection from the sun's rays on sunny days and some rain protection when it's inclement weather. For cold days we have a 'cozy-toes' for passengers if they still wish to venture out.

We are able to offer some carrying space to transport goods you may have purchased on your journey.

You just sit back in comfort and enjoy the ride. Let us and our chat rickshaw take the strain. For a safe, smooth taxi ride, book RICKY.

Service Information etc...

...preface : Long Stratton's BikeActive Taxi service, incorporating our chat rickshaw, came into being in memory of the BikeActive Norfolk chairman's late mother, Mrs Mary Briggs. Some will know that Mary lived in Porter Rd, Long Stratton. Because she had lost a lung to tuberculosis, nursing a patient, while in her twenties, there were occasions when she would struggle to walk into the town despite it only being a few hundred metres away. The cost of a taxi to and from the town was prohibitive and so without a lift being available, she would have to stay home.

With our taxi service, we aim to try to help negate this issue for others in future. The service is offered to ALL who are in a similar position to that of Mary, whether that be through injury, agedness, disability or ill health.

Our service is voluntary, so we can only operate when we have volunteers available. We continually ask for volunteers in the Long Stratton community and currently we only have a very small number. We hope to get more volunteers so we can cover all the time slots we offer but initially, availability may be limited. We will keep working on it.

We will offer the service between Monday and Friday inclusive, from the first week of May 2026 until October 2026 and therein annually.

Booking will be for a two-hour period, these will be 10am until midday and midday until 2pm. This ensures we do not run in times of busier road conditions.

If a booking is made and accepted, this is the procedure... using the 10am time slot as an example, we would pick you up at your home at 10am and take you to your destination in the town, where we would leave you. We would then need to collect you and leave you back at your home by midday. This then allows us to go on to the next booking.

We will operate anywhere in Long Stratton, as far North & East as the bypass, as far South as Lime Tree Avenue and as far West as Chequers Road.

Our taxi cycles are all electric-assist (pedelec) vehicles and are readily capable of 15 mph plus. We DO ride on the roads, the majority of which in the town have a 20 mph speed limit. Ipswich Road, Norwich Road and The Street have a 30 mph limit and we will ride on these roads as well, as they have a low traffic count and our vehicles are safe to use on these roads.

Our volunteers are all trained to pick up and load clients onto our various cycles. We have full public liability insurance

We are aware that this service will be completely new to many, although similar services operate in Bury St. Edmunds and Thetford. If you do need more information about what we are offering or booking, please email (see Contact section) and we will aim to explain in more depth.
